Muzzafarpur Sugar Mills closed down on account of cane shortage

After Maharashtra, 9 Muzzafarpur Sugar mills have closed operations before crushing season on account of cane shortage. This will lead to a shortage of 2.75 lakh mtpa of cane sugar. Normally, the crushing season will extend till May but this year it closed by April. The mills that have closed operations are Bajaj Hindusthan’s Thanabhawan and Budhana, Triveni Engineering’s Khatauli and Mawana Sugar’s Tiwali unit. The sugar mills have been paying Rs.10-15/- higher for a quintal of sugarcane against the state advised price of Rs.140/-

Indian Sugar Mills Association opposes duty free import of sugar

 

With elections around the corner, govt. is keen to check sugar prices by allowing imports. However, sugar industry is opposing the move on various grounds.  First, they claim such a move could lead to planting concerns.   If imports are allowed leading to dropping prices, then farmers would continue to switch to other corps leading to more imports in coming years. The industry suggested imports by mills with export obligation after September 09.

P K Ruia group is setting up a Sugar complex in Shariyatpur


P K Ruia Group is going ahead with its expansion plans. It is investing Rs.8000 million to set up a sugar complex at Shariyatpur in East Champaran district of Bihar. Around Rs.1300 million will come from Sugar Development Fund, while Rs.1200 million will be the promoters contribution. The plant will come up on 180 acres and will have cane crushing capacity of 1000 tpd and ethanol capacity of 240 kld. Around 104 acres have been acquired so far for this plant.

80% of sugar factories shut in Maharashtra


With sugarcane yield falling below 30%  compared to previous year, 113 sugar mills have shut shop on account of cane shortage. Reason for shortage is attributed to drought and farmers switching to other crops. Maharashtra being the largest producer of cane, this is a worrisome situation. Many farmers who cultivated sugarcane two years back, had not found any takers because of surplus and now it is the other way round.
