With sugarcane yield falling below 30%  compared to previous year, 113 sugar mills have shut shop on account of cane shortage. Reason for shortage is attributed to drought and farmers switching to other crops. Maharashtra being the largest producer of cane, this is a worrisome situation. Many farmers who cultivated sugarcane two years back, had not found any takers because of surplus and now it is the other way round.
