Food Authority to review milk ban from China

Following reports of milk contaminated with melamin, the Food Safety and Standards Authority has banned import of milk from China. The ban had been imposed in 2008 and is in force till June 2010. Recently, Chinese government has requested to lift the ban. However, media reports still suggests that issue is far from resolved. Chinese milk had been banned in several places including European Union and USA and they are yet to lift the ban. India imports only 10% of its need from abroad and hence the authority feels there is no pressing need to lift the ban.

Parag Milk Foods to expand Gowardhan Dairy brand

Parag Milk Foods Pvt Ltd, a Pune based dairy company is planning to invest Rs.1600 million in 2010 to expand its milk processing capacity to 20 lakh litres/day. It also involves establishing a cold chain, a milk collection centre with an investment of Rs. 120 million in Shrirampur near Shirdi in Maharashtra. The company USP is that it makes use of only cow’s milk to make various products. It may be noted, its new Palamner milk processing plant (10 lakh litres milk processing capacity) at Palamner in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs. 650 million is to commence production by year end. Motilal Oswal has picked up 11% equity in the company.

Mysore Milk Fed plans expansion programme

Mysore and Chamrajnagar Milk Federation chalks out an expansion programme to become a mega dairy by 2020 by introducing new milk products and by increasing its milk production. It will increase its milk production from 1,80,000 kg/day to 500,000 kg/day in 2015. It has been recently awarded a contract from Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam and Kottakal Arya Vaidyashala for supply of ghee. It is also planning to set up a cold storage in the border locations.

India remain the dairy capital for the world

India produced around 110 million tonnes of milk in the year 2008-09 which is 1.7% higher than the previous year. The National Dairy and Development Board had outlined investments of 173,000 million over a period of 15 years with an objective of raising productivity, strengthening infrastructure for processing, procurement, marketing and quality control. NDDB is also collaborating with scientific institutions to produce high genetic heretic bulls,
