Food Corp of India eases norms for warehouses to raise capacity

Food Corp of India, manages 60 million tonnes of wheat and rice , of which only 17.8 million tonnes are under covered storage. With recent loss of grains from flood and rains, the corporation is set to increase private participation in building warehouses. It is considering to ease up norms and make the projects bankable. They have also guaranteed 7 year rent and approved 12.7 million tonne capacity of warehouse across states. Another 2.5 million tonnes of capacity are also likely to be approved in states of Orissa and Chhattisgarh. It has also suggested to government on sale of coarse grains through online platforms like spot exchanges.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries which has announced a mega food park schemes two years ago is yet to take off. Only the Baba Ramdev promoted Patanjali Food & Herbal park is operational. The mega park needs big companies but they are shying away. To get foreign investment, some big names are needed to popularize . We have only Kishore Biyani has evinced interest so far and the big ones like Pepsico, Coca Cola, Britannia are yet to make any announcement.

Arvind Mills to foray into organic foods

Arvind Mills, the leading textile major is venturing into organic foods. It will grow organic food crops in the 1,00,000 acres of land acquired in Vidarbha region. Currently, the company is growing organic cotton and may shift to food crops as an alternate crops. The organic foods could be supplied to Spencers likely as a part of arrangement. It may be noted, the company has recently launched frozen foods
