Shrimp export suffers due to cheaper alternatives

Shrimp exports, which constitutes 50% of Indian sea food exports is hit by a cheaper alternative from China called white shrimp ‘Vannamei’. China came into this game with full flow, such that from 8.5% growth in 2003, it has grown to 46% and 16% in the next year to capture a large market. Further, with supplies growing, shrimp has lost its exotic trait. Indian sea food industry has to reinvent itself to look at other niche like cod-fish, tuna and cutle fish to arrest this slide
